September's Job Report: Rate Increases to 5.0%

September’s job report saw an increase of 156,000 nonfarm jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly employment report. Job gains occurred in professional and business services and in the health care industry.

Over the past three months, job gains have averaged 192,000 per month.

September’s unemployment rate rose slightly to 5.0%, up from 4.9% in August. The civilian labor force participation rate also rose slightly to 62.9%, up from 62.8% in August.

The report found that in September, average hourly earnings for employees on private, nonfarm payrolls rose by 6 cents to $25.79. Over the year, average hourly earnings have risen by 2.6%.
