October’s Job Report: Rate Moves to 5.0%

October’s job report sees an increase of 271,000 nonfarm jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly employment report. Job gains occurred in professional and business services, health care, retail trade, food services and drinking places, and construction. Over the past three months, job gains have averaged 187,000 per month.

Job gains occurred in professional and business services, health care, retail trade, food services and drinking places, and construction. Over the past three months, job gains have averaged 187,000 per month.  

October’s unemployment rate dropped from 5.1% in September. The number of unemployed people remained unchanged from September’s number of 7.9 million. 

The report found that in October, average hourly earnings for employees on private, nonfarm payrolls rose to $25.20. Over the year, average hourly earnings have risen by 2.5%.
