3 Reasons You Shouldn’t Cancel a Job Interview

You scheduled an interview at a local staffing agency last week, but as it approaches you begin to lose interest, get nervous or realize you have something else going on at that time. Should you cancel the interview? If you’ve received and accepted another offer or a major emergency has come up, it’s more than acceptable to call in and let them know of your situation. However, if your circumstances don’t match either of those, trying to reschedule or simply declining can do more harm than good. In this blog, we will look at three reasons why you should follow through with your planned job interview.

You Might Not Get Another Chance

If you’re looking at a position that has good pay and benefits or want to work at one of the top companies in the area, you’ll likely be one of many job seekers applying. When you get the opportunity to interview, you’ll need to make the most of it while it’s available. By cancelling or trying to reschedule, there is a likelihood that you’ll be passed over as the recruiter moves on to the next candidate.

You Will Leave a Bad Impression

There is nothing that frustrates a recruiter more than a candidate that cancels an appointment at the last moment – or even worse just doesn’t show up. This will give the impression that you’re unprofessional and unreliable. If this is your first experience with this recruiter, it can be difficult to build a successful partnership going forward. By skipping an interview, you’re not only impacting your current prospects but you may be limiting yourself for future opportunities.

You Will Lose an Opportunity to Improve Your Skills

Even if you think the job may not be the perfect fit for you, it still can be worth interviewing for the role. Each interview can allow you to further develop your communication skills and fix issues that you’ve had in the past. By showing up, you’re not guaranteed the job, but you’ll get valuable experience that you can use on the job or to ace your next interview. Even better, if you’re applying through a staffing agency like QPS, there may be another job they can recommend after interviewing you. An interview is the time where the recruiter will learn about your experience, skills and goals. By not showing up, you’re not even giving yourself a chance for success.
