January’s job report saw a gain of 304,000 nonfarm jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly employment report. There was an increase in leisure and hospitality, construction, health care, and transportation and warehousing.
Over the past three months, job gains have averaged 241,000 per month.
January’s unemployment rate rose to 4.0%, up from 3.9% in December. The civilian labor force participation rose slightly to 63.2%, up from December’s rate of 63.1%.
The report found that in January, average hourly earnings for employees on private, nonfarm payrolls rose by 3 cents to $27.56. Over the year, average hourly earnings have risen by 3.2%.
