It's not always about learning something new or starting fresh. If you're in the middle of a journey, it's unreasonable to go back to the starting line. Instead of resetting for the new year and unnecessarily beginning from scratch, sometimes all you need to do is pick up where you left off. Revisit your career plans and do these four simple things you can do today to step up.
Do you have an online presence? If not, take steps to remedy it and increase your online activity. Interact and engage with people, post updates, and share information. Most importantly, update your current career status. You can revise your profile on social media, especially on LinkedIn. Add your accomplishments from the previous year. Rewrite your professional summary and change your photo and header. People will notice when you have increased your activity.
The changing and evolving industry means you can't stay complacent for too long. In order to make informed plans for yourself, you need to catch up on the news in your industry. Subscribe to newsletters, magazines, and journals. Update your social news feed and follow key influencers and professionals on several social platforms. Watch and listen to podcasts and blogs, engage in discussions, and pick up a few new books.
Not fond of attending networking events and trying to start conversations with strangers? You don't have to. Simply build on your relationships with people you already know. Perhaps if you missed out on sending holiday greetings cards, show your gratitude with an appreciation letter. If it's been some time since you've been in touch with someone, reconnecting online and through social media can be easier. Getting the assistance of a mutual friend will also lessen the awkwardness.
Perhaps you didn't complete your resolutions from the previous year or were unable to get far. Don't give up just yet. Take another look at last year's resolutions and goals and reflect on the challenges you encountered. Learn what issues caused you to falter and address them when rewriting your goals. Divide each goal into smaller steps and go at your own pace, even if you must push back a few things to later in your career plan.
Make the most of this new year by reflecting on yourself and your career. Even if not today, strive to make a change and make plans for tomorrow.
