3 Ways to Make Yourself More Valuable at Work

3 Ways to Make Yourself More Valuable at Work

May 23, 2018

In a previous blog, we talked about how to differentiate yourself during the job search, but once you have the job you’ll have a new set of challenges with one of those being, keeping the job. What can you do to make sure the company wants you to stick around? This blog will provide three ways to showcase your importance to the organization, make your presence felt and improve your career going forward.

1 - Never Stop Learning

While the company has hired you because of the skills and knowledge that you already have, you will want to make sure that you are always developing professionally, not only to improve your prospects in the future but to ensure no one takes your job in the present. The more you know, the more valuable you are, so stay up to date on industry trends and apply them in practical situations. By embracing change and learning new things, you will demonstrate a drive for innovation and a model for others in the organization to follow.

2 - Accept New Projects

One way to learn new skills is by taking on new tasks from management. If you want to work at a company for an extended period of time and set yourself up for advancement opportunities, you’ll never want to say, “that isn’t my job.” When you’re willing do whatever is necessary to get the job done and can be successful at it, your value will show. This positive attitude and team player approach will not only cement your place at the company but can also put you on the fast track to a promotion.

3 - Follow Through on Your Promises

Knowing that you can be trusted is extremely valuable. When your manager can depend on you to show up and get your work done, they will have no reason to look for anyone else. And as you take on more responsibilities, the ability to prioritize your tasks and make sure everything that needs to get done, gets done will be crucial. It doesn’t matter the level in the organization, following through on all of your assignments shows commitment that every company is looking for.
