How to Create your own Luck in your Job Search

5 Tips to Create your own Luck in your Job Search

Apr 13, 2018

Finding the perfect career opportunity and getting your foot in the door is easier said than done. How do you create your own luck? The right job search strategy and planning can put yourself ahead. Check out these five tips to start.

1 - Prepare your resume and references list

Save yourself from the trouble of scrambling to put together an ASAP resume and reference list. Always having a polished and updated resume ready to send out is a good rule to follow, even if you aren't currently looking for work. You never know when a great opportunity will come along. The same can be said for a carefully constructed list of references in case a potential employer requests it.

2 - Develop your social network

Don't already have a LinkedIn account? Do yourself a favor and create a profile! LinkedIn is a great way to showcase your skills and experience, while making connections with people who can help with your job search. This professional social media page is a great one-stop shop to search for job opportunities, follow corporate business pages, and reach out to potential employers. However, be cautious and considerate about your online image.

3 - Connect with people

Get the word out that you're currently looking for a new job opportunity. Many people don't realize that a number of jobs aren't listed on job boards, or advertised at all for that matter. Spread the word to your family and friends that you're actively looking for employment; you never know when someone will have a connection or a lead. Additionally, step outside your comfort zone to reach and network with various people.

4 - Take shortcuts

Find yourself searching the same job boards every day? Most major job boards will give you the option of setting up job alerts or notifications. This feature allows you to set up alerts based on keywords or locations. Once you have everything set up, job postings will be sent directly to your email. Good bye, board burnout!

5 - Make the most of available resources

If you're getting stuck in your job search, free services are readily available to provide assistance. Many colleges and local libraries offer workshops, classes, and advice about writing resumes. You can also reach out to an employment agency- like QPS - to get connected with local employers. Our top notch recruiters have connected many great candidates with successful companies. Let us help you find your next opportunity!

Do not get discouraged. Searching for a new career opportunity is a long process, which usually doesn't come easy. Samuel Goldwyn once said, "The harder I work, the luckier I get." Remember, hard work and persistence will always pay off. The perfect job will come along when the time is right.
