Doing work you're passionate about may be the goal, but you have to give your all into pursuing it first. Even before that lies the bigger question: what exactly are you passionate about? It's hard to get started on pursuing that dream job when you don't know where you're going. Below are three steps to help you figure it out.
Be open to different possibilities. Don't start the search with your mind already made up about what you can and cannot do. Refrain from building an artificial ceiling above your head with practical concerns. That includes worrying about costs, fear of failure and averting responsibilities. Believe that you can rise above and beyond the scope if you really want something. When you start by limiting yourself, you hinder your ability to explore your options.
Review your experiences including past jobs, projects and activity. Make a list of the elements you enjoyed about each one. Don't pay attention to the job title or name of activity itself. The key is to look at the components that made up each task and recognize what you cared about. Then put it all together and narrow the list down. Figure out what your priorities are.
See what opportunities and jobs exist that fit what you want. Recognize what is a hobby versus a passion that can make you an income. Then translate what you're searching for into a goal. You also need to determine how it will affect your current lifestyle and livelihood. Additionally, it is important to understand how much effort you will need and will put in to reach your goal.
With a dream job to pursue, the planning begins. What are you passionate about?
