You’ve come a long way since filling out the initial application, but you may not be done yet. Some companies will ask prospective employees to come in for a job shadow. This additional step allows you to gain a better understanding of what your job will consist of and gives you the chance to familiarize yourself with the company and potential co-workers. This moment is where first impressions are built upon and hiring decisions are made. Here are three tips that will get you one step closer to a job offer.
In order to do well in your job shadow you have to be prepared before you walk in the door. You should research the company and gain a general understanding of what they do and who they are. When you arrive for the meeting, make sure that you are at least ten minutes early and dressed to impress. Be sure that you also have questions and something to take notes with as this demonstrates a willingness to learn and an advanced level of preparation.

The ultimate way to make a positive first impression is to show you’re interested in being there. Showing your interest by being friendly, enthusiastic, and appreciative of the opportunity will also make the people you are meeting with enjoy having you there. This is also a great time to address any questions or concerns that you may have. By asking questions about the position or company you are showing your potential supervisors and co-workers that you are ready to get to work.
The way you show you’re interested is by being attentive. A job shadow is all about listening and learning. Make sure you bring a notebook and write down as much important information that is said about the position or company as possible. This shows an ability to select and process relevant information that will be beneficial when on the job.
