Job outlook improving in Stateline

Beloit Daily News

There are plenty of jobs for the taking in the area, officials say.

"As always there are a lot of seasonal jobs. I think there might be some struggles in filling those positions," said Rhonda Suda, executive director of the Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development. "People are finding full-time regular employment in a more rapid pace than we've seen in the past."

Suda said she's seen many more help wanted signs in the past few months.

"I think there's a great opportunity for seasonal jobs. I see a lot of signs that I haven't seen before in the recent past," she said.

Area Manager Todd Stone of QPS Companies, one of the largest staffing firms, said it has been difficult to find qualified employees to work entry-level manufacturing jobs.

"The ability to work in an industrial manufacturing job are the qualifications they need," said Stone. "Accountability and reliability."

Stone said there are a range of jobs with pay from $9-$13 an hour for entry level positions. He added there are skilled professional positions available as well.

And it's not just in the manufacturing field.

In September, the Wall Street Journal reported companies like Wal-Mart, UPS and Amazon were having difficulty hiring for their warehouse workers. The slump in finding workers began in 2009, according to Stone.

Stone said the company has had to do a lot more marketing to help find workers.

Beloit’s unemployment rate was 5 percent in September, down from 5.8 percent in August and down from 6 percent in September of 2014. Beloit’s jobless rate still is the third highest among the 32 largest municipalities in Wisconsin. Racine had the highest unemployment rate at 5.7 percent in September, down from 6.6 percent in August and down from 7.7 percent in September of 2014. Milwaukee had the second highest unemployment rate in the state at 5.6 percent in September, down from 6.4 percent in August and down from 7.6 percent in September of 2014.

"If you're looking for work, whether seasonal or full-time, now is the time to look for a job," Suda said.
