You’ve made it through over 3 and a half years of tests, papers and all-nighters. Now all that’s left is to walk across that stage and dive head first into finding a job that uses your degree. Here are a few of our favorite tips to help you land that first job out of college and take the world by storm.
Don’t Wait Till Your Diploma is in Hand
One of the biggest mistakes you can make is waiting until after graduation to start looking and applying for jobs. While it’s tempting to live up your final days of college, you’re really just making it harder for yourself when you have that ‘what now' epiphany three weeks after graduation. Start now! Even just looking at what is out there can help you when it comes to getting a step ahead of your classmates.
Look Beyond Specialized Job Boards
While you might think it's better to narrow your search to job boards that specialize in your field, it can really limit the potential jobs you’re seeing. Try and keep an open mind when choosing job boards and don’t solely rely on your colleges or specialized ones.
Work Your Connections
Don’t just rely on the internet to find your first job. The idea of attending networking events may fill your stomach with dread, however think about the personal connections that you already have. People like family-friends and your college’s alumni network are easier to talk to and usually have a vested interest in helping you succeed.
Give Back
If you find yourself without a job after graduation, consider volunteering for a cause you’re passionate about. Not only will you be giving back, but it’ll give you something to talk about in interviews when they ask you what you’ve been doing. Plus, many non-profits may have work that pertains to your degree which can help hone in your skills and fill out your resume.
Stay Positive
Sometimes it can seem like you’re the only one of your friends without a dream job lined up and that can get discouraging. Keep your head up and stay positive, you never know what kind of opportunity will lead to that successful career.
There are many things that go into finding a great job after college. These things will help keep you ahead of the game. What’s your go to job search tip?
