March's Job Report: Rate Rises Slightly to 5.0%

March’s job report saw an increase of 215,000 nonfarm jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly employment report. Job gains occurred in several industries, including in retail trade, construction, and healthcare. Job losses occurred in manufacturing and mining.
March’s job report saw an increase of 215,000 nonfarm jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly employment report. Job gains occurred in several industries, including in retail trade, construction, and healthcare. Job losses occurred in manufacturing and mining.

Over the past three months, job gains have averaged 209,000 per month.  

March’s unemployment rate rose slightly to 5.0%, up from 4.9% in February. The civilian labor force participation rate rose slightly to 63%, which was little changed from 62.9% in February. 

The report found that in March, average hourly earnings for employees on private, nonfarm payrolls rose by 7 cents to $25.43. Over the year, average hourly earnings have risen by 2.3%.
