January’s Job Report: Rate Drops to 4.9%

January’s job report saw an increase of 151,000 nonfarm jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly employment report. Job gains occurred in several industries, led by retail trade, food services and drinking places, health care, and manufacturing. Employment declined in private educational services, transportation and warehousing, and mining.

Job gains occurred in several industries, led by retail trade, food services and drinking places, health care, and manufacturing. Employment declined in private educational services, transportation and warehousing, and mining.

Over the past three months, job gains have averaged 231,000 per month.  

January’s unemployment rate dropped slightly from 5.0% in December. The civilian labor force participation rate, at 62.7% was little changed from 62.5% in December. 

The report found that in January, average hourly earnings for employees on private, nonfarm payrolls rose 12 cents to $25.39. Over the year, average hourly earnings have risen by 2.5%.
