December’s Job Report: Rate stays steady at 5.0%

December’s job report saw an increase of 292,000 nonfarm jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly employment report. Job gains occurred in several industries, led by professional and business services, construction, health care, and food services and drinking places. Mining employment continued to decline.

Job gains occurred in several industries, led by professional and business services, construction, health care, and food services and drinking places. Mining employment continued to decline.

Over the past three months, job gains have averaged 284,000 per month.  

December’s unemployment rate remained unchanged from 5.0% in November. The civilian labor force participation rate, at 62.5 percent, also remained unchanged from November.

The report found that in December, average hourly earnings for employees on private, nonfarm payrolls declined slightly to $25.24. Over the year, average hourly earnings have risen by 2.5%.
