August’s Job Report: Rate Drops to 5.1%

August’s job report sees an increase of 173,000 non-farm jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly employment report. Job gains occurred in health care and social assistance and in financial activities. Manufacturing and mining lost jobs. Over the prior 12 months, employment growth had averaged 247,000 per month.

Job gains occurred in health care and social assistance and in financial activities. Manufacturing and mining lost jobs. Over the prior 12 months, employment growth had averaged 247,000 per month. 

August’s unemployment rate dropped to 5.1% from 5.3% in July. The number of unemployed people decreased to 8.0 million from 8.3 million in July.

The report found that in August, average hourly earnings for employees on private, non-farm payrolls rose by 8 cents to $25.09. Over the year, average hourly earnings have risen by 2.2%.
