3 Alternative Ways to Commute

Did you know carpooling, using public transit, walking, or bicycling just one day a week for a year can save you more than $500 in total driving costs? But alternative transportation does more than help your pocketbook-it helps the environment, public health, the economy, and your community. Here are a few alternative ways to get to you to work.

Ticket to Ride

Using public transportation is a great way to cut down on your commuting costs. A bus pass is far cheaper than a weekly fill up for your car. It also gives you a little bit of free time to unwind before or after work by reading a book, sending text messages, or simply taking in the scenery.

Biking to work eliminates costs of fuel and has the added bonus of fitting a workout right into your routine. This alternative option might not work for everyone, but if you are within biking distance of your office this is a wallet-saving solution to your morning commute.

Life in the Fast Lane

Many cities have specially designated carpool lanes that are reserved for vehicles with two or more passengers. These lanes are typically less congested than typical freeway lanes, which means your commute time could be reduced considerably if you travel with coworkers. Not to mention, stop-and-go traffic is a major headache. A carpool offers a healthy, social alternative to a solo commute. If you're looking for a way to get to know your colleagues and neighbors, hop in a carpool.

Using alternative transportation might not be possible every day, but even riding a bike or taking the bus for a week or two can make a difference. What are some alternative ways you get to work?
