Networking Do's and Don'ts (Part II)

Networking Do's and Don'ts- Part Two

Don’t be a pompous jerk.  This should apply to life in general, but especially when networking.  Realize that you don’t know everything.  Shut your yapper and listen to the advice that others are offering.  If you listen well enough, you may just find a lead on a job or future networking contact.

Don’t dress down…..especially at networking events.  Always dress to impress.  You never get a second chance at first impressions.  Be on your best behavior.

Don’t be passive.  When cold calling, don’t just take “No” for an answer.  If your potential employer says they don’t have any openings, ask more questions.  Ask if there may be openings in the future or if they know any other companies that are looking.  You may not get a good answer, but it never hurts to ask!

Don’t lie.  Liar, Liar pants on fire!  Unless you want to be known as a liar, tell the truth!  Lies always find a way to come back and bite you in the rear!

Don’t forget your roots.  If you land a job through networking, make sure you send that person a thank you.  No one likes to feel used, so make sure they know they are appreciated.  In addition, make sure you pay it forward! Help someone else out the way you were helped.
